Description

This is a great, albeit distant and not fully developed, crag in the heart of the Little Popo Agie canyon. It faces north and west, making it a good summer area when the rest of the Lander area is baking in the sun. The rock quality is quite variable. A big fire razed the cliff in the early 2000s, severely spalling some of the cliff while leaving other areas untouched. There had been a few routes bolted in the cliff before the fire came through, but the hardware on these earlier routes is quite suspect. Of historical note is a cache of severely burned bolting gear at the base of one of the walls.

I revisited this area in 2014 and found that many of the undone lines would still go, with a ton of cleaning. As of 2016 there are about 15 bolted routes with room for probably 50 more. The area is reminiscent of the North Country wall and will have about as many routes as that cliff.

Getting There

Approach as for the Sweat Lodge. Drive past Wild Iris on Limestone Mountain road, past the Aspen Glade, the North Country, and the Pass Creek Cabins. Take a left at the T intersection and then follow the road down to Pass Creek. Park just before the road goes through Pass Creek. Next find a trail that starts at the Pass Creek sign. Follow this for about fifteen minutes until you are almost at the Sweat Lodge. From here a cairn marks beginning of the Ghost Town trail proper. Follow steep switchbacks up to a bench and then hike about fifteen minutes more through small aspens and burnt pine trees. The very end of the trail tackles a small scree field to get you to the right side of the cliff and the Dead Zone.
