Description

The Frenchman Buttress is a big, elongated buttress that extends far uphill from its base. It is pretty chossy but could get much better with more use/cleaning.

Getting There

From Almont, head up Taylor Canyon past the Lottis Creek Campground towards the dam. There will be fencing and wire blocking access to the river soon after passing Lottis Creek. Cross the Taylor River to the north bank, and then begin to look up and left (north). The buttress is maybe only a quarter-half mile below the dam. Park at a pullout where the private property along the river ends (there is a wire crossing the river there).

Climbing Season

For the Taylor Canyon area.

The route follows one of the cleaner dihedrals up the buttress's SE face.Pitch one starts on the last easy access, grassy ledges below the dihedral and moves up ledges that funnel you into the dihedral system. Move up into the dihedral, and do some delicate stemming and face climbing up to small ledge with a bush.Pitch two climbs the splitter dihedral hand crack through the small, arching roof and finishes with 15' of finger crack to a large ledge system.Pitch three seems to have several options...[more]   Browse More Classics in Colorado
