Description

A nice, tall boulder wallowing in the creek bed of Rattlesnake Canyon. Characterized by an impressive swooping feature on its upstream face, the boulder resembles a crashing wave, hence the reference to the original and best surf-film of all time. In my opinion, that is. I'm not really a surfer.

Perhaps a better reason for the name is the fact that at one time the boulder had a healthy, gurgling stream flanking its base. No longer: one of the longest droughts recorded has sucked almost every drop of water out of Rattlesnake Creek. Good news? You can currently climb one of the canyon's best boulder problems!

As with many of the other blocs and walls in R-snake, this stone may have seen action by other locals in times gone by. Maybe it already has a name. I'll gladly change this post if I've irked someone.

Getting There

Walk up the main Rattlesnake Canyon trail, for about 12-15 minutes, passing the turnoff for the creamery (which occurs after about 5 minutes of walking). The trail eventually heads down in to the creekbed. At this point, turn sharply left and walk DOWN the creekbed, instead of continuing to the right on the main trail. Follow a small trail for about 100 feet. Thar it be. Can't miss it.

A difficult, tall, and imposing line with a thrilling top-out. The sit-start begins on obvious low crimp-rail. Crank some burliness right off the deck, figure out your feet, and try to turn the bulge and gain the slab. Once you attain the layback rail, fire to the top of the boulder, and, with your butt dangling fifteen feet in the air, press out a classic mantle!Keep in mind: when there's a healthy stream you can't properly sit-start the problem—that is, you can't without placing your pad in a...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
