Part of the "Wedding Party"

This hard to locate, sandy, and wind swept spot is a heart throbbingly beautiful location. But the best part is that you can drive to within 100 yards of the main conglomeration of towers if the flash floods have not barred your approach. Most of the towers are within 1000 ft. of each other. These 100 ft. monoliths are on decent rock (the bottom being in the Entrada Formation-Cretaceous and the cap rock is in the Dakota Formation-Jurrassic) and all have lines of weakness which looked to go free. The best looking of the wedding party (The Bridesmaid) has cleavage that made me swoon. There are eight towers here in the main group and as of 10/16, all now have been summited. The exception is the not very distant (25 min. walk) Wedding Dress Tower, see this link:, which may very well be done soon. There are also some nearby walls that have some fine trad lines in waiting on the cliff band behind the towers.

Getting There

The best way in is to leave HW 89 just west north west of Church Wells Utah, and head north, north west on Cottonwood rd. (sand & clay). Take this for approximately one mile. After crossing the cattle guard and prior to going through the pass, turn right on a rough double track. Head up a short distance to a couple of close and sweet camping sites. These are the best and most logical spots to camp for a number of reasons. If you are heading south on the Cottonwood Rd. from Cannonville then from the start of the dirt at the entrance of Kodachrome Basin State Park it is approximately 36.5 miles to the Campsite and 36.0 to BLM Rd. 431. But coming from the south is the least problematic. To get to the towers from the recommended camping locations, you will need to get back on the Cottonwood Road and continue west north west for about 1/4 miles to BLM rd. 431 where you head north east. Take this for several miles, until you reach your third right just before a closed gate. There is a "Wilderness Study" sign for the field to the right of the road. This very rough double track drops into Coyote Creek heading south east. It crosses the creek three times before driving in the creek/wash. This is a 4X4 drive to be sure. When it opens up and you see gentle sandy hills on your right, drive up the shoulder and park out of the wash. There is a LONG and rough road (327) out of Big Water and takes 2 hours one way but does drop you in at the old cabin just across the wash. With either approach, walk up the hill to the south and see the towers only minutes away. From campsite to towers using 431, about 5.5 miles or 20 minutes. It appears that the towers are on "State Lands" but may be on BLM/GSENM.

The start in softer rock and finger tips is the crux but that being said, watch out for the pumpy overhanging finger locks higher up. The exit over the cap rock is no give me either. This will eventually go free at around 12a....[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
