Examining the Baths Boulder.

Description

This is the most popular location on the island of Virgin Gorda. The beach is beautiful, and the boulders are abundant.

This beach can get very crowded with tour groups and cruise ship excursions in the late morning and afternoon, but before about 10 or after 4, it can be fairly secluded. This is also when the temperatures are not as high, which is better for climbing.

There are boulder piles to the north, between the Baths and Spring Bay, but the majority of the climbable and protectable boulders are on the southern end of the bay, near where the trail hits the beach.

Poor Man's Bar, on the beach near the trail, is a small snack stand that offers sandwiches, drinks, and souvenirs. It's only open around mid-day, to cater to the crowds, so don't expect to buy a beer to go with your evening climbing.

Getting There

If staying on Virgin Gorda, the easiest way to the Baths is to take the trail from the Top of the Baths. Take Tower Road south until it ends in a parking area, and follow the well marked and well traveled path down to the beach. Note that there is a $3 entrance fee per person to use this trail. The walk is less than 5 minutes from the parking lot to the water.

You can get to the Baths from Devil's Bay to the south by following the arrows and crowds through 'The Cave' trail.

The beach can be reached from the water easily. There are dingy docks and mooring buoys. You cannot bring a dingy all the way to the beach, so be sure to keep your chalk and shoes in a dry bag.

A less orthodox approach would be to scramble south from Spring Bay over the boulder piles. Expect at least 30 minutes of not insignificant boulder scrambling, backtracking, and pathfinding for your first attempt at this.

Another alternate approach is to swim south from Spring Bay. Again, be sure to keep your chalk and shoes in a dry bag, and there's no reasonable way to bring a crash pad along and keep it dry.
