Description

This one comes out of nowhere! I know Chris already posted a pic of this somewhere but I saw it the other day and thought I'd get it up on MP. Anyone been on it?

Getting There

Start from the south shore boat landing parking lot just as you would for The Reserve. Follow the Reserve trail to start, but when it heads east, head south up the hill instead. The Surprise boulder will be on your right.

Yeah kind of a neat standalone boulder in the middle of the woods. Surprise indeed! Couple easier lines on the west side, hard on the north and east side. Kinda crappy landing on the north.

I can't believe no one has posted routes on this yet. It's ripe!

I added a bunch of problems here that I thought were the most obvious lines in the area. This is a fantastic spot with an easy approach, mostly flat landings and mostly moderate grades. The Surprise Boulder itself is one of the more impressive freestanding boulders at the lake.

That said, I have no clue what any names, grades, FA's, starting positions or general info is for any of these problems. If anyone(Peter) has more info please comment here and we'll change things accordingly. I climbed what I thought were the most obvious starting positions and offered what I thought the grades were, but I could very well be wrong!

Yes! This boulder is really cool and I'm glad you added some problems. Peter did some hard stuff on here and hopefully will update.

People have been climbing on this boulder for about 15 years or more. Eric Z showed it to me in about 2000-01 but I'm not sure if he found it or if it was Paul Jones or Eric Bernard. The only problem (or some version of it) I'm aware that hasn't been done before is the V8. I honestly do not know who has the first ascents on the V0 to V3 problems. The smaller boulder of the two (the one with Surprise arete) also has a traverse going all the way around (V3ish). To my knowledge nothing was ever named. Used to be a great spot to hang out and get away from the crowds.
