This is a short, long, Skinny, vertical fin in the Luminary Area. This thing has a slabby back and a vertical front. The back has lots of slopey and positive knobs, and the front is covered in fun, sharp, thin crimps.

Getting There

New Trail! Thanks to the hard work, dedication and passion from the volunteers of the GHSP Bouldering & Stewardship Weekend (2017) and the Central Appalachia Climbers Coalition we now have a nice climber access trail into the awesome Luminary Bouldering Area.

The easiest way to the Luminary Area is to walk down the back side of the Listening Rock Trail (not the start of the trail with the wooden overlook, but the trail head that is normally the exit of the loop trail which is at the corner of the lower parking lot). Walk down the trail and pass the trail’s end boulder and the Wildwood Bouldering Trail.

The trail into the Luminary Area when walking in from the LRT in this direction is at the start, just before the first boulder at the Autumn Boulders. There is a large boulder directly beside the trail at the Autumn Boulders (trailside) and the start of the Luminary access trail is just before it leading downhill. Walk down the stone steps and follow the trail, the first boulder you will come to is Equinox.

Rock Climbing Photo: Sugar Maple Slab (Undercling rail start chalked)

Sugar Maple Slab V0-1 4+  Virginia : Grayson Highlands State Par... : ... : Sugar Maple Fin
This is pretty easy going and really fun. On the back of the fin look for the most aesthetic slab face with the very low rail undercling. Match the undercling and post up feet. Pop up to the slopey knobs and ripples and then follow the path of knobs, crimps, and slopey patches to the easy top... If the start is too contrived (seemed logical to me) than stand start on higher knobs and v0 sprint to the top. Fun either way!...[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia
