Description

This place is amazing and seemingly the best kept secret in Europe for Fall, Winter, and Spring climbing. Americans and the English speaking world have simply not yet discovered this place. The Italians from up north sure have and the weekends see the more popular crags flooded by Romans and northern Italians. The rest of the time you have the crags to yourselves! Summer must be high season for the beach but too hot for climbing.... Unless you really like sweating and thailand like heat.
Some of the best limestone imaginable with Mediterranean well protected muli-pitch moderates to Sharma-friendly 5.13/14 cave tufa/routes in the Grotto. The food of course is typically awesome but because you are in the south, prices are much more tourist friendly than in the expensive North. Just go to any Bar after climbing and ask for "Aperitivo" and you will get so many snacks of cheese and sausage and pizza and pasta and olives and mozzerella with your drinks of choice, you won't have to wait for the 7pm opening of the restaurants:)!

Getting There

Situated practically in the middle between Rome and Naples, it is really easy driving for 1.5 hours from Rome, which is a museum in and of itself, to Sperlonga. There are more than 50 crags all spread about all within easy access to beautiful beaches. 100s and 100s of routes to choose from and even lots of multi-pitch seaside potential waiting to be developed.

The Italians especially here around Sperlonga are gracious, generous, and excited to meet Americans discovering there paradise!

Monte Orlando is a big seaside cliff on the Mediterranean and is just one of many many climbing areas at Sperlonga. After approaching via rappelling, traverse (Pitch #1) to the big flat dry ledge 10m above the water to the base of the route. The route climbs behind the huge freestanding pillar clearly visible from the tourist overlook and basically face climbs through a massive chimney feature ending up back at the top of the cliff where you started.
