Solomon Gulch is located just beyond the hydroelectric plant on Dayvill Road. It is a gnarly, narrow canyon with a pool at the bottom that can be crossed on old pipes strapped to the canyon walls. The cliffs on both sides of the gulch are vertical and over a hundred feet tall making it an intimidating place to play. It also means you will normally have a great story to tell at the end of the day, that is if the hydroplant employes don’t tell you to go home. The other option for approach is to hike in through the pine trees on the upper right rim of the canyon and rap. This involves a little more effort but can save the hassle of the utility company trying to shut your adventure down.

Getting There

Drive out of town and turn right on Dayvill Road as if you're headed to Alyeska. The gulch is located just after Solomon Gulch Hydroplant on your left. Park where ever you can find a plowed out area, and walk back to the bridge. Enter from the base of the canyon and risk being yelled at by the utility company or rap in from the west rim of the gulch after punching a trail in through the pine trees.

This is a very steep two pitch climb that stays quite sustained so a hanging belay may be necessary in order at the top of pitch 1. Climb to the top of pitch 2 and walk down to Dayvill Road or rappel the route using V-threads and alders....[more]   Browse More Classics in Alaska
