I need a pair of new 3-season boots for alpine ice. The ideal is to try a few different pairs on at a store or order a few different pairs and try them, but I have small feet (Men's 7/6.5, size 38.5 Mythos) and most places (physical or cyber) just do not carry any boots below 41. My Spantiks are 41 and they are fine. REI was selling Rebel Pro's at a great price but the smallest they were selling was 41 (which is supposed to be between 7.5 and 8 according to Scarpa's size chart, and most folks have commented that the Rebel Pro is "true to size." When I put on a pair of medium-weight REI wool socks, I felt very comfortable walking around on the slate tiles in my kitchen: the fit of the heel felt just right but my toes had much more room than they needed. An extra pair of liners helped reduce the "extra" space in the toe box, but when I put on a pair of light-wt. Smartwool socks underneath the medium-wt. wool socks, the boot felt too tight. Given the facts that (1) I learned recently that I have been sizing all my shoes way too small (so I am not used to space around my toes) (2) my toes will swell up, have I found the right size boots? Yes, I should get a pair of 40.5 and a pair of 40 to try out the only place that I can get both pairs is from Scarpa directly (e.g. Moosejaw has 40.5 and 39.5 but no 40, but I know 39.5 is too small ...) And in case anyone is looking, Moosejaw has the Rebel Pro at 20% off right now (as small as 39, but no 40 and 40.5) alkwok

Try to put a real insole in the boots. Something like the Superfeet Red. Allen Sanderson

The Superfeet will only raise the heel volume a bit in my experience, which may not solve the problem of lots of room in the toes. It also may put your heel out of the pocket it should rest in for good front pointing.

Bite that bullet and pay full price from Scarpa or go to a brick and mortar that you called to confirm stock on.

I had the rebel carbons for a summer boot sized with my toes "snug". If the laces loosened much I could get a slight toe bash front pointing, did loose one toenail when I was too stubborn to re-tighten.

I got the rebel pros with some wiggle room for my toes, but the heel is still secure. I'm much happier and as a bonus my toes stay much warmer. My sizing sounds similar to your description, too loose with just a medium wool sock, some wiggle room with a thin liner under, and too tight with a light/medium combo.
