Shortoff - Upper Wall Rock Climbing
A cold day at the upper wall.
This is a small steep cliff that is located above the main walls at Shortoff, and it is the perfect place to get in a couple of extra pitches at the end of the day. With super easy access and a nice flat and grassy ledge area below it is also just a nice place to hang out in the afternoon sun. Most routes require either topping out, or building a temporary TR anchor at the top - which can be cleaned on the hike out.
The wall is located toward the southern end of the mountain, roughly above Construction job and south. In fact, most folks in the know actually approach the routes below this way as well, saving a lot of time on the standard gully descent and hike along the base. If you do this, the upper wall is even more convenient to climb on the way out at the end of the day.
Very easy. As soon as you arrive at the top of the cliff (just above the new rock steps) locate a foot trail that leads down to the overlook, which is the top of the wall. Wander around left to get to the bottom.

But for historical sake, I'll describe both variations here:Climb up the obvious weakness to some ledges and move right to a .75 camelot slot (where an old pin used to be) above a prominent thin pointy flake. From here the route climbs up the steep somewhat chossy holds to merge back into the main crack system at a ledge. Don't blow it toward...[more] Browse More Classics in NC
