Description

There are more than 20 climbing areas in the Schwarzwald. Sharing tectonic birth with the Vosges Mountains, the Scwarzwald consists of gneiss and granite capped by sandstone. The mountains are heavily wooded and appear similar to the Appalachians.
Northern areas are around Baden-Baden, Southern around Freiburg.

The Schwarzwald is a part of the continental divide, the Rhine going to the Atlantic, and the Donau to the Black Sea. The rivers coming less than 30 miles from each other.

Getting There

Freiburg is a major port of journey for tourists to the area. Full of history and fable, Freiburg sits in the middle of many climbing areas. Though Baden-Baden has also a high concentration of good climbing, and healing waters to accompany them.

If you only do one route in Battert, this should be it. It's fairly easy, the most photogenic by far and just plain fun. From the start, it isn't immediately clear you're climbing a tower. Once you get to the belay, i.e. sitting on top of the little tower it is. The top of the tower is just big enough for 2 people, pretty tight for 3. The crux is stepping off the tower onto the wall. It's not as bad as it first looks...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
