This is a very common beginner's climb at Great Falls. Climb the dihedral and be on the lookout for finger locks in the corner. I've watched numerous newbies get a bit frustrated on this - somewhat technical - moderate. So if you're introducing somebody who's completely new to climbing think about some of the more straight-forward, ladder-like, climbing to the left as a warm up. Beware that excessive rain can swell the Potomac and flood this area. For more information see the Potomac Appalachian...[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia

The sandbox is a great area to climb especially for beginners. There are seven routes in the Sandbox area, one 5.2, two 5.3's, a 5.4, two 5.6's and a 5.7. A nice little beach area with trees for the kids to sit and play while waiting (Potomac river can be dangerous). Easy access from the parking lot. Get there early and beware parking in the afternoon during the summer can be limited.
