The San Francisco Peaks.

Description

The famed San Francisco Peaks are a southwestern icon, spiritual home of the Kachinas, a sacred site to over thirteen different southwestern indigenous tribes, and named by each. The Peaks are also home of the tallest point in Arizona, which is Mt. Humphrey's at close to 13,000'. This beautiful mountain oasis is surrounded by deserts to the north, west, and east, and the worlds largest stand of Ponderosa pines seem to cascade away from the Peaks in all southernly directions like a living lava flow.... These mountains are cherished by anyone who spends time in their depths, and on their summits.

Famed Spanish explorer Coronado, passed through the mountains with his men in 1540, but didn't stay long. He was once again on the move towards a grand canyon, that he had heard of to the north, during his epic quest to find the fabled "Seven Cities of Gold".....

In 1629 a group of Franciscan Friars made contact with the Hopi Mesas to the east of the mountains. It was this group of "explorers" who christened the mountains The San Francisco Peaks, in honor of their patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi.

The Peaks are a stratovolcano formed over the course of some 2.8 million years. They once built themselves up to an estimated height of 16,000'- 18,000', before finally exploding and falling into itself forming the caldera of The Inner Basin, around 200,000 years ago. The San Francisco Peaks are also home to The Arizona Snowbowl. One of only a few ski hills in Arizona, and with good reason. Don't miss out on a mesmerizing fall hike through Lockett Meadow!!!

The Peaks, as locals lovingly call them, hold a great network of trails, that will take you not only to the lofty summits, but through unique eco zones, canyons, and radical ridges. The views, of course are outstanding. Whether you are looking northeast towards the painted desert, south towards Oak Creek Canyon, or admiring the expansive volcanic fields and mounds all around, you will have the sense of being in a holy place. And it it is.

Looming over the hobo cave awaits this steely-eyed test-piece. One perfect weakness climbs this extremely overhung face. Start from the obvious rail at the arête and crank through the first of two high-gravity bouldery cruxes. Thin and sharp crimps, pockets, and yes, even a jug or two, pack a punch in just under 60 feet of dacite....[more]   Browse More Classics in AZ
