Although more well known as a tourist destination featuring numerous artist studios and galleries, and a busy Saturday market, Salt Spring Island does have some routes to offer the travelling climber.

To be honest, no one will ever consider Salt Spring Island to be a climbing destination, but if travelling there for a family vacation it is certainly worth bring a rope and draws or a pad for a day on the rock.

The guidebook for the island is Saltspring Rockclimbs, by Gus Oliveira, and documents some 33 routes and a larger number of boulder problems. The routes are all contained on Mt. Maxwell, while the bouldering is found in two areas: near Vesuvius, and near Burgoyne Bay. The guidebook is available at Island Escapades in Ganges, and possible elsewhere on the island. I highly recommend purchasing the guidebook to help support the local climbing community, but barring that the information on these pages will hopefully help you find your way.

Getting There

Access to Salt Spring Island is via ferry from either Vancouver Island (Schwartz Bay or Crofton) or from Tsawassen on the mainland. Consult the BC Ferries website for sailing times and fees. Reservations are recommended. Once on the island, a car with reasonable clearance is needed to reach the climbs.
