RAIN, WET ROCK and RAPTOR CLOSURES: The sandstone around Moab is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Also please ask and be aware of Raptor Closures in areas such as CAT WALL and RESERVOIR WALL in Indian Creek MORE INFO >>>

Description

The middle of the three canyons cut into the Bluff Sandsone Member north of town. It is flanked on the east by the much longer Cottonwood Wash, and on the west by Outlaw Canyon. This shallow canyon had no local name I'm aware of, so I applied this as a "climbers' name" for the area. No previous evidence of climbing activity was seen after several recon missions in the canyon. There are limited systems of interest to climbers, but definitely some more potential. Yet another beautiful slice of desert, easily accessible, but with a distinctly remote feel. Rock art and ruins are scattered throughout the area.

Getting There

From the west side of Bluff, turn north off of Highway 191 onto 7th West (at Comb Ridge Coffee). Follow 7th a block (passing the distinctive roundhouse) and turn left (west) at the intersection. Proceed another 100' or so until a right (north) turn on 8th (not sure if it's signed as such) ends in a fence and dead-end. Park here.
A short access easement path leads between the private lots and into BLM land just beyond the residences. Follow this path over a rise and cut left (west) into the mouth of the canyon. Follow the wash, or faint hiking trails along it up the canyon.

This beautiful splitter starts as tight hands, quickly yields perfect hands, and launches abruptly into never-ending, slightly overhung cups/tight fists with a slight off-set. Ends on a small ledge. The rock is pretty good for the Bluff Member, but has a slight grit to the crack which makes tape (I almost never tape in the desert) highly suggested.A sustained line with physical climbing that will follow the desert mantra of hand-size dependent difficulty. Shade until early afternoon....[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
