Approx. two miles from the town of Kennicott, the root glacier allows for great summer ice climbing with relatively easy access. St. Elias Mountain Guides offer guided glacier treks and ice climbs during the summer.

Getting There

Drive to McCarthy and take a shuttle from McCarthy to Kennicott for $5 ea way (2016) or hike the extra 4-5 miles to Kennicott. From there, continue hiking down the road through the old mining town and ruins as it turns into a trail, continuing straight until you see a rather obvious sign for glacier access. Turn left there and head to the toe of the Root.
