Description

A hanging valley such as this surely has inspired such authors as Hesse and Wagner. Yosemite better get some new clothes. This route is long, however you have many fully stocked hüttes to stay in. In fact, you could do the route in five days spending one night at each of the following huts in order Kochelbergalmhütte, Bockhütte, Reintalangerhütte, Knorrhütte, then summit and back again. You can do this route in one day if you are in ship shape and up for 5-8 hour ascent, and 3-5 hour descent. Start early to avoid thunderstorms.

ROUTE: From the DB Ga-Pa station, walk out front and go straight down the street around the curve through Partenkirchen, past the Olympisch Stadium...down a gravel drive. You will notice a shrine on your right hand side, here if you look up to the right (south) you will notice a road, you may take this one to the Kochelbergalmhütte, or keep going straight through the Partnachklamm (worth it if you haven't been but opens at 8am sum., 9am winter). If going early you will have to take the first option. Follow this windy wagon road past the Kochelbergalmhütte all the way to the Bock hütte. At the Bock hütte, you can get breakfast. follow the signs for the Reintalangerhütte. Once there, follow signs to the Knorrhütte, and once there, follow the trail up and over the Zugspitzplatte to the summit. There is a klettersteig cable, which in good weather you could go without gear (if comfortable). Otherwise pack a harness and two slings/screamers with biners.

Location

Between the wettersteingebirge. Trail starts at the Olympic Ski Jump Stadium.

Protection

Cables.
Gore-tex, vibram boots, 2L water, 2lbs food(or bring money and purchase calories at the huts).
