RAIN AND WET ROCK The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. MORE INFO >>>

Description

Highest peak in the Calico Hills "proper".

Mostly white sandstone -- except for its summit cap which is red sandstone (and not so easy to get up on top of).

. . (also known as "Turtlehead Junior", though its rock type and appearance are not similar to much higher Turtlehead Peak).

Some possible climbing routes:
  • ? west or southwest face ? (reported in print guidebook + SummitPost)
  • traverse from Tank Peak from SE

. . (more info see on SummitPost, and detailed description in Courtney Purcell book page 70
. . . . also with photos + GPS in Branch Whitney book pages 69-73).

Getting There

- - > "rc" on the map.

Most quickly reached from the Sandstone Quarry parking on the Red Rock Scenic Loop road.
. . (but there's no easy way to its top, or even to near its top).

Significantly longer and more uphill from parking in the Calico Basin area.

Climbing Season

For the Red Rock area.

Featured Route For Red Cap

Red Cap Ridge 5.4 4a 12 IV 10 VD 3c  Nevada : Red Rock : ... : Red Cap
The idea is to traverse the ridge of Red Cap from SouthEast to Northwest. Lots of interesting 5th and 4th and 3rd class climbing and scrambling, with lots of big views. Not so far from the road (Sandstone Quarry parking).Fits well into a "grand traverse" of the Calico Hills ridges.Since the SE end of the Red Cap ridge is at Tank Peak, first need to climb that summit. The NW end of the ridge finishes with a drop-off (which would be much more difficult ciimbing than the rest of the route...[more]   Browse More Classics in Nevada
