If you are familiar with Rainbow in the summer, the winter presents many of the same qualities: meeting another party is a cause for joy, not for concern things will get crowded; a relatively easy approach (less altitude gain than, for example,to Texicao Slab and WAY more options once you are there) , and ease of determining the on-ice/on-rock conditions (just drive to Lower Falls on the Kanc and LOOK.)

However, if you are looking for cutting-edge WI 5+ and 6, this is not the place. Think multi-pitch Grade 3 to 3+ with rappels required to descend.

Getting There

The winter approach is almost always done via the logging road from Albany Cover Bridge (5-6 miles west of Conway, NH) then using the climber's path that arrives, essentially, at the base of "Perfect Wave".

Figure about 30 minutes of flat walking along the logging road Roughly 1 1/4 miles), then 10 minutes through the woods, and a last 5 minutes of steep. If you are good carrying a climbing pack with X-country / back-country skis the logging road is a very easy ski and you'll probably save some time.

See the detailed approach in the Mountain Project summer write-up: New Hampshire / Kancamangus Crags / Rainbow Slabs.

L'Anniversaire / True Colors Ice WI3  New Hampshire : * Ice and Mixed Climbing : Rainbow Slabs - Winter Ice
In a good year, basically the whole slab from the "Coloring Book" corner to the edges of "Rhino Skin" ices over, with the thickest ice in the area of "True Colors" and "L'Anniversaire". Plenty of room for at least two independent parties to climb without dropping ice on one another. BE CAUTIOUS of the possibility of SNOW AVALANCHE of the lower-angle snow above the ice. PROBABLY BEST TO AVOID THE AREA IF THERE HAS BEEN A FREEZING RAIN FOLLOWED BY A HEAVY SNOW. Pitch 1 - Climb directly up. Be...[more]   Browse More Classics in New Hampshire
