Description

Piru creek is a must if you live in LA county, and would still be worth the trip if you're coming from farther. It's a newly developed crag offering a variety of bouldering from v0 to v11. There are a total of around 72 boulder problems at the moment. I will get around to posting more climbs. There are never crowds, except for a handful of hikers and fisherman, and the rock quality is mostly bullet with the exception of the occasional choss. The boulders are mainly conglomerate, with an abundance of granite features. There are however quite a few sandstone blocks up stream, most of them still undeveloped.

Getting There

To access the Piru Creek boulders, you must get onto the 5 freeway. If heading north on the five from the LA area, then you will get off at Templin highway, the first exit north of Castaic. Turn left and drive under the freeway, then turn right onto the California Golden state highway which basically runs parallel with the freeway. Its an asphalt road the entire time but the road has quite a few potholes. After turning onto the golden state highway drive for about 5-10 minutes until you can't drive any farther. there will be a big gate not allowing cars to drive any farther. And there will be parking all along the sides of the road. The parking is for 'Frenchmans Flat' a campground which has Piru creek running through it. The main boulders are found down stream into the canyon. (Not up the road past the gate) Follow the trail which runs parallel on the southern side of the creek. Its about a 1 mile hike in, which will take about 10-20 minutes, and you know you're pretty much there when the trail forces you to do a short class four scamper down 15 feet of rock or so.

Perplexity V2 5+  California : Los Angeles Basin : Piru Creek
starts with your hand crossed low to the left, still standing though. then pull up using small crimps and feet to finesse your way to the top. You can bail out of this climb left or right, and take an easier less steep route to the top, which go at v1. For full value go straight up the steepest part using a seam over the lip to pull yourself over....[more]   Browse More Classics in California
