Pillar of Hope(left) and Gate keeper(right)

This is the east pillar of the twin pillars of Hope and Despair. The East face is about 40' high and features two very nice, pumpy 5.10's: Rise and Devour and Dismembered. The south-facing arete starts on lower ground, allowing for the lengthier Brewser (5.9). There are a couple more climbs on the west face, in the corridor between the pillars. The rock is solid with a good bite for the shoes on account of the coarse grain.

Getting There

Approach as for the Cemetery/Pillar of Despair. The Pillar of Hope lies directly to the east of the Pillar of Pain, and southwest of the Gate Keeper.

Climbing Season

Rise and Devour 5.10b 6a+ 19 VII- 19 E2 5b  California : High Desert : ... : Pillar of Hope
Mostly awkward movement up vertical to slightly overhanging plates, some of which are hollow. Moves distinctly right after the 2nd bolt onto vertical terrain and a shared juggy finish with Dismembered.Rated 5.10a/b in the guidebook but it seems just a little harder than that. ...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
