Apparently, the climbing potential was originally discovered by Glen Burke and the routes established by the Perkin Brothers and Jorge Visser. The rock is limestone with lots of fossils, and the climbing positive. The rock quality is good and there are currently 30 published routes from 5.10 to 5.14.
This is a cool weather crag. The phalanx has climbing on all sides, but despite some shade it's too hot for summer climbing.
Here's a cool video which was my inspiration for going there.

Getting There

Either travel here with high clearance or tack on quite a bit to your hike in. Follow the directions to Dutchman's Draw. The Phalanx is just a little further down the same road.

Climb the ever steepening tower on very unique chert, sharp edges, and fossilized rock up to a rap anchor/midway station (5.8ish). From here follow the line of bolts on the right (left bolted line goes at .11c) up into the exposed steepness, and a short edgy crux before making the chains just shy of the summit (.10b). The towers summit is a bit chossy, but you can soak in some beautiful views & wild exposure while on the very small summit plateau....[more]   Browse More Classics in Arizona

Sticking very strictly to the mileage listed in the guidebook to make our turns we were actually able to navigate our way out there without a hitch, in a mid-sized rental nonetheless! Not sure if I'd have driven my own vehicle that far or not tho... Anyhoo, we were able to park just before the wash starts. The hike in took longer than we thought, just stick to the main wash which navigates around I believe 4 big turns before you can spot it up high on the left side of the canyon. It's impossible to miss! If you round a sharp right 180 bend in the wash you've just passed it...
