The Perins Peak State Wildlife Area closes seasonally, usually mid-Nov./early Dec. to late May/early April, for big game species.

Description

With two distinct sides to the cliff-band, the SE side, and the NE side, this peak is a prominent landmark of the Durango skyline.

The SE side is a series of good rock cliff-lets mostly about 50 feet in height which drop away to scrub on the South end of the band, but on the North end, the band is around 80 feet and continues above a lovely shale cliff, which drops away precipitously down a heavily eroded, grey scree slope.

The good rock above this death cliff is filled with amazing cracks, dihedrals, arêtes, and faces on quality stone; this great band of rock continues around the prow to the NE side. This NE side has even more potential for those willing to do a burly hike with gear.

The names here reflect the railroads, mines and people around camp “Perin's City,” which was located below the peak.

Getting There

Bike/hike up Twin Buttes trail, on the north side of US Hwy 160, to the hairpin (see the photograph). Hike up dry creek gully, cross oak scrub to juniper, turn left, make way through scrub up slope, and contour right and up.

I'd heard Jim Beyer did a route up here somewhere years ago....

Jim! I know you are out there; if this is true, give us the details, please.
