Description

Also known as Bear Claw Spire or Treasure Peak. While not as tall as Merriam, Royce, or Feather across the way, this peak is worthy. If you're hiking to the Royce Lakes to climb Merriam, this could be a good way to get more climbing for your hiking. The north side of the peak has a lot of good looking granite and is home to two routes from the 60's as well as the Northeast Ridge.

The summit block is airy and unprotected low-5th class.

Getting There

Park at the end of the Pine Creek Road at the pack station. Walk through the pack station gate to get to the trail. Hike up the Pine Creek Trail 6.4 miles to the turn-off for Granite Park and Honeymoon Lake. Follow this trail around Honeymoon Lake and up to about 10,500.

From here if you're only climbing 12,563 travel cross-country and camp somewhere near Golden Lake. If climbing Merraim, Feather, etc continue through Royce Col to get to Royce Lakes. Either way you're hiking through relatively pristine High Sierra country. Practice LNT travel: walk on rocks and slabs when you can, don't build cairns, camp in already hardened sites.

Climbing Season

For the 07 - Humphreys Basin, Pine Creek and Granite Park area.

This fun route is a good adventure climb in it's own right or a great warm-up for other climbs in the area. It hasn't seen a ton of traffic as of 2015 so there is a bit of flakey rock. There are a lot of possible variations here, this one works well.Start left of the toe of the ridge and left of an orangeish right facing corner, around 11,670 feet. Climb a few pitches, choosing your own adventure and staying just left of the crest of the ridge. This leads to a shallow gully with 3rd and 4th class ...[more]   Browse More Classics in California

This peak is on the main crest, unusual that the higher peaks are to the west.
