Cajas National Park is located just west of Cuenca on the highway that heads towards Guayaquil. The park is filled with rock, not much of which is developed. It's a beautiful park, but frequently has bad climbing weather. Check for route info

Getting There

From Cuenca, head west towards Guayaquil. It's about 30 minutes to the entrance of the park. There are several areas interspersed throughout. You can also go by bus from the main terminal in Cuenca; take a bus to Guayaquil but tell the driver you intend to get off in Cajas. There is a bus stop in Cajas right across the road from the main park office to catch buses returning to Cuenca. Otherwise you can hitchhike fairly easily. Be very careful about getting lost, some tourists have died of exposure while hiking around the park and getting hit with unexpected bad weather. Additionally, please be respectful of the park and the delicate environment. DO NOT leave trash or waste, including biodegradable waste as this park has a lot of visitors and already struggles with trash accumulation in some areas. In fact come with a trash bag and help clean up while you're there. Stay on designated paths and try not to destroy the delicate grass and moss that grows there.
