Description

The Parang Mountains (Munții Parâng) are among Romania's high mountains (topping out above 2500 meters) and form a curved ridge above the city of Petrosani. The range is good for general mountaineering as it has access from a ski area which gets you as far as treeline. The steepest faces of the mountains are northeast and form a nice set of glacially carved bowls with steep chutes.

Parangul Mare is the highest peak in the range. There is plenty of rock on the north faces although the faces are not as big as in the Fagaras or Bucegi ranges.

Getting There

From Petrosani you will need a taxi or car to reach the cable car station. Almost all trips start from the top of the cable car and require traversing the range to access the areas you want to get to.

Climbing Season

For the Europe area.

this is the most climbed route of Paragul Mare (Vârful Parângul Mare) It starts at the top of the ski area 5 miles to the Northwest. Climbers follow the ridge, climbing up steep snow on another peak called Cruje, 2 miles NW of Paragul Mare's Summit. This climb has avalanche hazard and some beginners may want to rope up for this face. After climbing Cruje you drop down to a notch and slowly ascent a windblown ridge. The ridge top is sharp and drops off to the north. There is an easy snow climb ...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
