Pala delle Masenade is a long south facing wall that rises up as the south side of Moiazza sud. It sits directly above Refugio Carestiato. Its right side contains the bottom half of a spectacular long via Ferrata (Gianni Constantini) that is a nice days outing when you want to climb but not use ropes. The wall has many traditional lines and is beginning to sprout sport climbs as well. Given is southern exposure, 300 meter height, clean rock and moderately short approach (1 hour) it is a nice place for a not so difficult day in the mountains.

Getting There

Park at Passo Duran. Hike up the hill on the well worn path behind the hut until you intersect the road (path 549). Turn left and head for Refugio Carestiato (45 minutes to the hut). Walk past the hut on trail 554 towards the Vazzoler hut - the wall directly to your north (facing south) that you walk under for the next 20-30 minutes is Palla delle Masenade.

You will have difficulty finding cleaner more solid rock anywhere in the Dolomites. The upper pitches are some of the most enjoyable climbing at this grade I have ever done in 35 years on the rocks - steep/overhanging with huge jugs and many threads for protection– making this feel like a warm up route in a gym that just ke...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
