BETA PHOTO: Outrageous Overhang Wall, the first that you come ...

Description

This is one of the best areas on Independence Pass for powerful, steep, sport climbing on great granite. Climbs range from 5.7 to 5.12+ with at least 1 project climb that may be harder. Most of the climbs fall in the 5.11 to 5.12 range.

Getting There

Park at the Grotto Walls parking area and walk uphill along the road for about 300 yards. Look for a cairn marking a climber's trail on the left of the road. Following this trail, the first climb you will arrive at is Thug Route on the Outrageous Overhangs crag.

Per D. Scott Clark: 1. Outrageous Overhang Wall, 100 feet up from the road, continue following cairns to the left to get to the other areas.

2. Climb the scree/steep path till you come to a faint fork. Go right/straight up for Thindependence and V2.

3. Go left, and then follow the steep trail to Junior Olympic Wall.

4. Continue left past Junior Olympic Wall, and arrive in the middle of Opening Ceremony Wall.

5. Olympic Wall and Bedrock are to the right from Opening Ceremony Wall.

Rock Climbing Photo: The approximate line "Fox Trot" shown in...

Fox Trot 5.8 5b 16 VI- 15 HVS 4c  Colorado : Independence Pass : ... : Olympic Wall
As far as 5.8 sport routes go, this one is close to as good as it gets. This route is located on the first section of the Olympic Wall and just to the left of 50 Yard Dash. It is also the 2nd route to the right on the Olympic Wall. Sweet climbing past 8 bolts, I think the crux came surmounting the bulge halfway up. ...[more]   Browse More Classics in Colorado

Directions for this place are terrible. Here's my attempt at something that makes sense.

1. Outrageous Overhang Wall, 100ft up from the road, continue following cairns to the left to get to the other areas.

2. Climb the scree/steep path till you come to a faint fork. Go right/straight up for Thindependence and V2.

3. Go left and then follow the steep trail to Junior Olympic Wall.

4. Continue left past Jr O wall and arrive in the middle of Opening Ceremony Wall.

5. Olympic Wall and Bedrock are to the right from OC Wall.
