This area has newer routes on a feldspar quartz dome close to Forest Road 100 (Buffalo Park Road). These are mostly sport routes with a few trad, sport, and mixed lines waiting for first ascents. All routes crimp, pinch, or stem their way up quartz nubbins, with the occasional dark inclusion or light colored intrusion. As with all new routes on this type of rock, watch for the random nubbin popping off. Be aware that this dome, as well as the main Rose Dome, sit in a burned-out forest... trees sometimes topple during periods of high winds. All but one route are on the west face of the formation, and they receive plenty of afternoon sun.

Getting There

Drive out of Steamboat to the top of Rabbit Ears Pass. As you are nearing the east summit, look for Forest Road 100 (or Buffalo Park Road) on the right. Continue on this well maintained gravel road for 8.7 miles. You will Come around a right hand bend and both Rose Domes will be directly in front of you. The one on the right, north, is the "Other Rose Dome". Park on the left in a pullout/primitive hunters' campsite. Approach by crossing the road and picking up a trail immediately past a yellow left hand turn sign. This "trail" is marked with blue survey tape and lined (somewhat) with logs the entire way. Within the first few minutes, you will walk across a large log laying over a moist grassy area. From there, follow a flat, shallow ridge all the way to the dome. It is approximately 10-15 minutes.

Climb a lower angle water weakness, clipping bolts out right. This is a good first lead....[more]   Browse More Classics in Colorado

Great route. Was on the recon with Tim when we found it; he got it before me, but he deserves it. Local guy that does great things for the Steamboat climbing community. Great work, Tim.

Very easy to find using the posted directions. Nicely marked easy-to-follow trail. Super quiet, other than the annoying flies. The climbing here is... not my style, but it takes all kinds and to each their own.

Is there a guidebook that includes this area? Or anyone with more knowledge of the route development?

New routes at the Other Rose Dome... I'll add these to the data base in the comming weeks. All new routes are on the East face of the formation and are listed right to left. (the way you would walk along the dome from the approach trail):

1. Short Top Rope; 5.10 TR; fun but awkwardly hard, to a water groove/crack finish.
2. Righty too Tighty; 5.8+ 6 bolts; slab to a blocky section, finishing in a water groove... fun!
3. Squirrel; 5.9, 4 bolts; tricky start to a seemingly blank section, finishing on better holds.
4. Moose; 5.9+, 6 bolts; thin steeper start, to a thin slab, then through a couple of overlaps to the top of the rock.
5. The Sound of One Hand Stemming; .11b/c, 5 bolts; cool hanging water groove with a couple of interesting moves. Start on the same bench as the next route.
6. Black Rose Stem; 5.9, already described in the database.
7. Moose Whisperer; 5.11-, already described in the database.
8. Whisper to the Baby Moose; 5.8 trad; starts as for Moose Whisperer but follows the left crack.
9. Piggly Wiggly; 5.8+, 6 bolts; starts just left of Moose Whisperer in a deep cleft. Chimney, stem, and crimp your way to the top.

There is an extension on the last two routes... 20 more feet that goes at 5.10... two pieces can be used to protect this slightly overhanging section to the top.
