History Lesson -
The Lamprey is the only major river in New Hampshire that is contained entirely within state borders. The Swamscott Indians, a tribe of Algonquian-speaking Pennacooks of the north, settled here to fish and farm. Over the centuries, these falls provided power, bringing prosperity to the Newmarket shipping trade. The name of the river comes not from the lamprey eel but from John Lamprey, an early settler. Before Newmarket was incorporated as a town in 1737, the area was known as Lampreyville

Work your way up to the shelf (The hand) below the chin using the tight horizontal crack (the lips) to stand up. Reach above to a solid hold (Above the forehead) to a moderately sloped top out. ...[more] Browse More Classics in New Hampshire

Newmarket will never be a destination, but we did make the climb in 50 states book. We have an amazing long history of bad climbing in town. I have heard it was joe cote who first cleaned and climbed the dame rd slab in the 70's. I'm also sure that generations of UNH students have been hitting some of these places for years.
I'm biased (wife owns it) the Big Bean is the best breakfast, lunch and coffee in town!
