Description

Neptune Tower is a 1,000' wall of spectacular golden granite, guarded by a brutal 2.5-3.5 hour uphill slog which gains over 3,000' in elevation. Neptune could be considered the leftmost and highest of the towers in the Mayfield Canyon "Pink Band", but is accessed from a different approach than its brothers to the North. 2 known routes exist on the peak - the Graber/Rowell III 5.10 and Fred Beckey's Stormy Petrel IV 5.8 A0.

Getting There

Park as for the Rabbit Ears. Hike north past the Smokestack gully and ascend the rough Wells Canyon drainage. When you reach the base of the Direct North Ridge on Wells Peak, you've made it halfway. Continue up a narrow gully and through a saddle to get your first view of the tower. More steep sand, loose talus and bushwhacking ensues.

The route follows the most prominent feature on the East face of Neptune Tower - a giant left-leaning ramp/dihedral leading to a large pedestal below the headwall. Various guidebooks have this route listed as IV 5.8 based on Fred's writeup in the AAJ, where he fails to mention that they aided off the bolts to overcome the blank face section on P2. A honed slab-master with no fear of bad 1/4"ers could likely free the short ladder at .11+/.12, but otherwise the route is mostly classic moderate cra...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
