Anyone had the chance to use Climber's Guide to North Carolina and Selected Climbs in North Carolina? I'm looking for a recommendation, comparison, pros/cons from someone who has used both. Also, is Selected Climbs in North Carolina the only GB that contains Linville Gorge? Thanks in advance for your help. Tevis Sherfield

NC as a whole doesn't really have a great guidebook anymore. Recent efforts by Erica Lineberry, Mike Reardon, and Sean Cobourn have turned out some good area specific books, but nothing new for the whole state, or for the Gorge. The select area describes stuff reasonably well but doesn't include everything, and the complete guide has LOTS of stuff in it, but is no longer complete and doesn't describe a lot of routes.

Personally, I think your best bet is any book + MP. That'll usually get you up stuff and out. Or buy the newer books if that's where you're going.

Just get selected climbs and wing it (ask people) if you can't find something. It is a good starting guide to the state. But if you know you are going to spend several days in the Piedmont, Rumbling Bald, or near Brevard get area-specific guidebooks. Benandstuff

Carolina Rocks by Erica Lineberry is awesome for Piedmont area climbing. Both Mike Reardon books are awesome for Cedar and Rumbling Bald. Other than that, the selected climbs of NC is about as good as it gets for a "comprehensive" NC climbing guide. Escotti Milhizer

Thank you guys for all your help. I think I will get selected climbs to start with. After spending some time at the different areas, I'll get some of the area specific guides for my favorites. Tevis Sherfield
