Chambe East face. Several climbs are located here

Description

Mulanje is in the south of Malawi at the heart of the tea plantations. This is a large granite massif, with the biggest vertical faces in Africa. The massif reaches its highest point on Sapitwa Peak, and has a well organized system of trails and huts, leading through forests of cedar trees. It has some great and seldom climbed granite routes. The climbing is (very) run out, and finding locals to climb with you will be near impossible. Bring a partner and a real sense of adeventure. It is what is known as a Inselberg: a rocky mass that has resisted erosion and stands isolated in a level area.

Permits and guides are required to hike on Mulanje. Both can be arranged at Likabula forest station. There are fees for the huts and the permits. Lots of advice is available in Mulanje township.

The now out of print "A Guide to the Mulanje Massif" is very handy, and a few copies still exist. Finding one could be harder than the climbing.

The massif is covered in hardwood forests and numerous waterfalls and streams flow across the central plateau. It can even snow here in the cold season, and expect cold temps at night any time of year.

Mount Mulanje ranks among the most majestic sights in Malawi and is worth a visit to the area just to see it. From the top of Sapitwa one can view the Zomba Plateau and Lake Chilwa.

Getting There

There is a good road from Blantyre (the M2) via Thyolo to Mulanje. From the township there is a dirt road from Mulanje to the entrance at Likabula forest station. If using public transport take a taxi from Blantyre to Limbe, then from the Limbe to Mulanje town. Vehicles to Likabula are harder to find, but possible with the right fees...

Climbing Season

For the Africa area.
