Description

The northeast face of Mt. Quadra is home to two famous and difficult waterfall ice routes, Gimme Shelter and Arctic Dream. While there is avalanche hazard on the approach slopes, the biggest concern to climbers are seracs that occasionally and randomly let go from the glacial ice near the top of both routes. Quadra is also remote, requiring approximately 12 miles of skiing to access. Furthermore, in the winter the northeast face never sees the sun, but the snow and icefields on top do. It is for these reasons, that even when formed, these routes see very few ascents.

Getting There

To get to Mt. Quadra, ski the Moraine Lake road (closed in winter) from Lake Louise. The road is groomed for skiing most of the way in winter, stopping short of a prominent avalanche chute, about 2 miles from Moraine Lake. Once you reach the lake, take the well defined trail to Consolation Lakes, which lie below Mt. Quadra. 4 - 6 hours depending on conditions.

This spectacular line was, as the Josephson guide says, "climbed way ahead of its time." And even today with modern equipment, it is a serious undertaking. The climbing is difficult and sustained, it doesn't let up. Furthermore, it is difficult to evaluate the route beforehand, althoughthe upper half can be seen from lot #3 at the Lake Louise ski area. There is avalanche hazard on the approach slopes, but undoubtedly the biggest hazard is i...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
