No fly zone / access can be difficult and dangerous MORE INFO >>>

One of the best locations for alpine ice and mixed climbing in New Zealand.

The Empress Hut provides excellent shelter, close to the South Face. The hut is unmanned, but has a radio that can be used to contact park rangers.

Due to the relatively difficult approach to Empress Hut, the climbs are rarely crowded and there is usually space available at Empress Hut.

Getting There

The approach up the Hooker Glacier Valley to Empress Hut is long and involved.

Most of the climbs will require crossing heavily crevassed glacier and bergshrunds, on the approach from Empress Hut.

Climbing Season

For the South Island area.

Once over the bergshrund, the climbing is relatively straightfoward. Depending on the state of the bergshrund, it may only be possible to cross at avalanche cones that have filled the bergshrund with snow....[more]   Browse More Classics in International
