Upper snowfields. Possible avy danger.

Mount Harwood is a peaceful and extremely windy peak just east of Baldy. Not a heck of a lot of people go here, so take that as an advantage to get away from the trekking-pole wielding helmet-people.

There are a handful of steep snow routes up the north face, and the northeast face provides a snow climb with a fair amount of rockfall danger. If doing this, please pay attention to the forecast and go fast!

Getting There

Manker Canyon is probably the best approach from the south. If you want to do the northside routes, best way (with a high clearance vehicle) is through Lytle Creek on 3n06.

Manker Canyon heads right up from the Ski Lift road to Harwood. If you've hiked up Devils Backbone, you'll know this canyon/gully as "that one sketchy part" where the trail thins and goes across 100ft or so of steep scree with big slide potential to the left. This route is what the author uses when doing stuff on the north side of Baldy and Harwood, as it's a more direct way to knock out miles and elevation to get into the backcountry....[more]   Browse More Classics in California
