Description

Many boulders surround the Mormon Trail at South Mountain. Most of them are unclimbable due to choss, but there are several with solid holds.

This area is not well developed. My recommendation is to not commit to a move until you are confident that the holds will not break.

I have only been climbing in this area for about a year. I don't know any backstory as far as what others have accomplished here, so if you have any information, please drop a comment. For now I'll keep the routes unnamed, since there's a strong chance others have done them before me. Locations will also remain unnamed and will be grouped by distinct gps coordinates, at least until enough routes are cataloged to define better overarching groups.

I'll keep updating with more routes as I find them and remember to get pictures.

Getting There

Start at the Mormon Trailhead, which is located at the end of 24th St. There will be a parking lot just on your right once you turn left onto E Valley View Rd. If the lot is full, you can park on 24th st.

Hike up the trail for around a mile. The boulders that I have found so far are located around where the trail opens up into a sandy, flat crest. I will try to add GPS coordinates and pictures for each boulder.

It's a moderately steep approach, so be prepared. Also, this is a popular hiking trail, so of course be courteous and expect a lot of "Is that a yoga mat on your back?" kind of questions.

Start with both hands together in a slot about six feet off the ground. Go to second slot to the left and up. Use holds on the overhanging part to swing your feet over to the mini boulder. Follow the lip of the mini boulder until you get to a good spot to top out on it. The face behind the mini boulder is off....[more]   Browse More Classics in Arizona
