BETA PHOTO: Moot Point, north aspect. Tiki is to the left.

A cool conical spire. It lies at the intersection of two walking paths and just above an area where the kids like to scramble.

Fairly good rock quality it seems (I didn't pull off any holds!) but the apparently requisite SoDak lichen abounds.

Getting There

We approached from the loop parking lot on the east side of the lake:

Skirt around the north border of the lake on a walking path, up a nice little rock ramp, and then down the stone slab stairs. Continue with the rock-dam on your left until you see the spire on your right.

It is the last formation on the right before the trail hangs a right. There is a (difficult?) route that goes thru the orangy roof on the NW side.

Maybe 8 minutes from the car?

Start on the E/NE corner in a squeeze between Moot Point and the adjacent rock (Tiki). Gain a ledge on Tiki and step back over onto the north aspect of Moot Point. Follow the crack to the horizontal ledge/crack, step up, and fire the final crack almost to the top-- but not quite. Make a few face moves to the summit....[more]   Browse More Classics in South Dakota

This photo is actually of the pinnacle known as "Moot Point". The route is 5.8 and to my knowledge the FA party is unknown on this route. Paul Muehl once told me he believed I might have gotten the FA of this route in 1981. The "Poorperson's Guidebook" lists this route. "Tiki" is the rock on the left side of the photo.

I believe the BH Climbers Coalition recently replaced the anchor bolts and other aging hardware on the rock "Tiki" to clear up matters... not to mention the route "Ocean Spray" is just to the right of the original route on Tiki. The original route on Tiki has fixed gear on it.

The "unclimbable orange overhang" mentioned has a Larry Shaffer route on the NW corner. 'Touch the Sky" lists another route that is 5.3 starting in ths notch between Tiki and Moot Point (east side) that traverses the south face and finishes on the SW face. The FA on that route was by Bob Williams and friends in 1972.

Hey Brent,

Thanks for clearing that up. I was using the Stephens "Adventure Climbs of Herb & Jan Conn" guide (and the maps therein) to locate, and I guess I misread the map (Moot Point was not marked, but now upon a review of the map, p20, I see where I went wrong).

Anyway, I had a blast in the SoDak Black Hills and I hope to return.
