Description

This isolated area doesn't see much traffic, but there are some interesting Cutler hoodoos to climb. The area is very quiet and starkly beautiful, and you are very unlikely to see any other people around.

Getting There

The Moore Cutoff Road runs between I70 and the town of Moore on the western side of the Swell. The known climbing is in a band of Cutler that is split by the cutoff road.

This area is not well signed, but google maps/earth is useful, as is the detailed Utah atlas. The GPS coords listed are for where the dirt road to the hoodoos intersects with the Moore Cutoff Road.

This is a neat formation. It is a little bit dirty, but the rock is decent. Start from the north side. Follow a crack system to the first chimney/offwidth (this is the R section unless you have really big cams.) Move left to the next chimney and either free climb past bolts, or aid C0 through this chimney. Traverse right to a really nice finger/small hands crack that leads to the top. Aid this crack at C1 or go for the free ascent.Descent: I believe a 60 meter rope would work, but trail...[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah

The Moore Cutoff Road, or Emery County Road 803, also has some excellent bouldering potential, just a few miles east of Moore. After going east from the "town" of Moore, the road turns south and cuts through a cliff band known as the Molen Reef. Then the road turns east again and flattens out. For a mile or so, the slope below the reef is littered with boulders, some quite large. The reef then curves north away from the road, with even more boulders.

ACCESS NOTE: THERE ARE SOME NOTABLE, AMAZING, ANCIENT PICTOGRAPHS ON SOME BOULDERS IN THIS AREA! DO NOT CLIMB ON OR NEAR ANY PICTOGRAPHS OR PETROGLYPHS! ALSO, DO NOT DISTURB ANY DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS YOU FIND!

You must have gone out to see the pictographs at Short Canyon. Love all this stuff out there.

The obvious stuff right off the cutoff road is kind of fun. There must be 5 miles of house sized boulders. Not all of them have easy ways down and lots of them need a bit of cleaning. If someone wanted to boulder out there, you'd need to bring a few ladders to clean a little chunder.
