Mern is the spire located just below (North) of North Needle and Guilt Edge, sitting about 50 feet southwest of Liederkranz and 50 feet north of Limp Richard on the ridge. Watertower is also in the area. Mern is named after a cross of moss and fern.

Getting There

Use the normal approach to the Chessmen. You can identify Mern by it's striking arete split by several horizontals.

Death Flake Arete 5.8+ 5b 16 VI- 15 HVS 4c  South Dakota : The Needles Of Rushmore : ... : Mern

One was removed and the other has become known as the Death Flake. Watch out for it on the left hand side of the route about a third of the way up! It is possible to climb around it on the right then step back left to good holds just above the Death Flake as was done on the first ascent....[more]   Browse More Classics in South Dakota
