BETA PHOTO: The boulder from the southeast side.

This is a sunny spot that faces south from the north side of Deadman Gulch valley. It seems to see very little traffic. The boulder is part of an outcropping of rock at the crest of its hill. It sticks out like a large fin at the top of the hill, so it feels really exposed while climbing, but the landing isn't so bad. This fits a couple pads and spotters.

The rock on this specific boulder seems pretty solid, but I'm sure some breakage will occur before all possible problems are established.

Getting There

Upon entering Deadman Gulch from parking across the highway, take the less-visible trail uphill to the right. Follow this path past all the smaller rocks and boulders until reaching a large meadow that leads uphill on your right. At the top, you can see Dance Hall of the Dead. Go uphill towards Dance Hall, and head left when you reach it. Following the ridge line left will lead you to the Mental Crux Boulder. I'll get GPS coordinates up here soon.

It's technically easy, but it's also tall, exposed, and beautiful. The rock took a little cleaning but is fairly solid. The colorful lichen isn't really an issue for climbing, it just added aesthetics.A more complete problem could start from the ground instead of the shelf but would...[more]   Browse More Classics in CO
