Memorial Falls is a new rock climbing area with the bulk of development happening in 2014 and 2015. As such, the rock needs to see more traffic before it "cleans up". The rock quality is very good. The rock is Neihart quartz and was first identified in this area. The hard pink rock has shimmering layers of maroon crystals that can been readily seen along the approach and at the bottom of the cliffs. Routes range in difficulty from 5.5 - 5.10b with many more routes possible in the higher grades. As a new area, the crags in this area are still very secluded. The routes are clustered on individual outcrops in the Belt creek canyon and range in height from 30 - 150ft.

Routes will be added as they are developed.
Please contact local route developers if you are interested in developing routes in this area.

Information on routes in this area can be obtained at the soon to be opened Hi-Line Climbing Center in Great Falls, MT.

Other information on other routes in this area can be found in Ron Brunkhorst's "The Big Empty: Climbing in Central Montana"

Getting There

From Great Falls take highway 87 east then turn south on highway 89 past the town of Neihart, MT. Bob's bar in Neihart has excellent local beer on tap and some of the best fried calamari and sweet potato fries you will ever try. Put it on your agenda for apres climb. Bob's is also a hotel if you need lodging.

Camping can be found all along Belt creek and two developed (Forest Service) campsites can be found up and down stream of the parking area at the Memorial Falls trail head. Memorial Falls trail head is immediately after highway 89 crosses belt creek after passing though the town of Neihart. If your are approaching from the south the keep and eye out for Memorial falls trail on your right just as the highway drops between large broken rock outcrops. Approach to individual crags is in the individual crag descriptions.

Empire Crack 5.7+ 5a 15 V+ 13 MVS 4b  Montana : Memorial Falls : Prospector Crag
Empire Crack takes a splintering crack line up the face of the Sunset wall. The crack is very featured, but at times deceptive. The route is nearly on vertical and though the moves are never above 5.7 the length and consistency of the route will get your arms burning. Near the middle of the route is a really fun undercling diagonal that passes a bulge with a big jug at its terminus. There is a ledge just past the undercling at about 100' that is large enough to belay from if ...[more]   Browse More Classics in Montana
