Dobbe on Melinhead.

Description

Just down the slope from Barrel Ridge towards the road lie these boulders. You can see them if you drive slowly past the ridge and look up and right. Dismissed by some as choss, the larger boulder is, in fact, choss. Melinhead climbs the slightly overhanging corner closest to the ridgeline using edges and sandy sidepulls on the big boulder. A committing final move leads to the mossy topout. Another line could go up the overhanging face on the ledges but would be somewhat scary.

The corner of the larger boulder facing you in the photo.

Maybe 15-16 feet tall? Hard to tell since there was 2 feet of snow on the ground. The overhanging face has some slopey ledges but I couldn't tell with all the frost on it if it was chossy or if there were any other features. I presume it's been checked out before, it's not far out of the way.

Location

Downhill from the Barrel Ridge area towards the road.

Protection

Pad.

This is a fun problem. Sandy, but fun.

Yeah, kinda unique and a bit heady. Thanks Remo. Looks like you guys did the aforementioned problem up the face. No way I was committing to that one without a spotter. Looks fun!

I cleaned it up a bit today, sweet finger lock for the final move!

You trad climbers! I couldn't do a finger lock to save my life. After the cleaning was the problem a pile of sand on the forest floor? :) Have fun at Jackson Falls. Jealous.

Quite solid I thought. The finger lock was in the seam on the left side of the face, were you more to the right?

I used those on the left face as sidepulls. The last move was kind of hard I thought, insecure long reach up and right, as I recall. Fun.
