Vital juices a.k.a "May Day" |V6| Climbe...

A schist boulder just south of the Fingerspan (the metal cage footbridge on the lower trail, on the north/east side of the creek). When its hardest route was first put up on toprope in the 1980's, it was originally considered a 5.13.

Routes, left to right:

  • Mayday (V6)
  • Vital Juices (V0)
  • (crack to the right) (V0-)

Getting There

Just south of the Fingerspan along a trail on the east bank of the Wissahickon.

The real name of the climb is vital juices and yes it has been soloed with multiple spotters. If you climb the overhanging chimney crack to the right of vital juices it is 5.9. The climb was typically soloed with two spotters. Your feet release from the rock and if you fly off and don't have spotter well.... it is along way down to the river. Also there is an old aid line just outside the livezy rock side of the fingerspan.

Thanks for the info Alan! I tried to update the routes with your description.

What did that aid line go at?

Just did this on one pad and no spotter. Definitely scary. I'm not sure where the 5.12+/v6 came from. This was equivalent to a haycock V0- and easier than Phone Booth 5.10a/5.9+ at Ralph Stover. Regardless of the difficulty, this is definitely one of my favorite lines the park. Cudos to the first ascentionist!!

The V6 is called Mayday, climbed mid-90's by Colby Barth. climbs the sit, from the far left, follows a seam up and right. The line up the middle is 5.9ish. there is a bolt up top.

Seems accurate. The photo for this boulder is misleading. The jugs that Jeff Carrol is grabbing are the jugs I grabbed. So he breaks right at that point to continue Vital Juices? I did go straight up to where the bolts sit around the lip. Would be sweet if someone took a picture and drew lines of which route is which since the descriptions are pretty vague.
