BETA PHOTO: Beginning of Generation Gap, Inception, and Dune

This is the large amphitheater sporting a beautiful waterfall, accentuated by broken bottles, trash and graffiti around the fire pit under the overhang... the price of being close to town and in Southern Illinois.

The clean overhanging wall left of the waterfall is undercut by a large chossy roof, which is why all the climbs share a start on the left side of the wall. By working these routes, if nothing else, you will absolutely dial the shared boulder problem that serves as a start to these routes.

Be sure to watch out for the large icicles that form above the shared start during the winter. They have been known to break free and bludgeon the heads of unwary belayers.

Getting There

Along the main trail, it's the large, obvious amphitheater with a waterfall.

Extremely fun. Head right after pulling the low roof and follow the ledge for several bolts. Get a good rest before embarking on the quality overhang above. Stay on your toes for several bolts of slopey, bouldery climbing. Difficult to get back on after taking the huge whipper at the end of the crux. A tighter catch helps there. ...[more]   Browse More Classics in Illinois
