Climbed at Lumpy today, fortunately it was cloudy and not a bazillion degrees, because the water fountain is no more.

I walked by it earlier this year (or winter?) and it was still there, but turned off. Today I saw that the hardware was removed and it was cemented over. Anybody know the history? Maybe this is a long coming completion of removing the old trailhead?

Sadness. :(

I know I saw that today and it made me sad - I've had many a grateful drink at that fountain after a long hot day. Any chance it's temporary, for repairs or something? Em Cos

It is a sad day for America. I remember talking to a ranger several years back and he told me that they had intended to remove the fountain, but the water actually tested as some of the purest in the region, so they decided to keep it active. Wungiz

Perhaps its usage is causing a water shortage at the cabin nearby? Probably not this year, but maybe in years past. Mathias

How far was this water fountain from your parked cars?
Maybe throw some water bottles in your cooler along with your beer?

Well guess you've never climbed at Lumpy if you don't know where the fountain is located.

It is at the spot where the old closer to the crags parking lot used to be before the park service bent over for the owners of the ranch and moved it.

It was up two or three stairs to a really nice rock fountain that offered beautiful views of the park and a refreshing gulp of cold water or a rinse of ones head under the hose spigot that was so refreshing after the days spent on the south facing cliffs and the walk out thru the fields totally exposed to the sun for a good part of your day.

One of those things I hoped to enjoy with my ten year old son who I took to Lumpy for his first time yesterday and I was in utter disappointment that it was not operational.

Hopefully this it temporary but from the plumbing fixtures I saw on there it looked more permanent. Such a shame as some family paid money and had a plaque installed there for someone who passed....

Was the dedication plaque also removed? That fountain was installed with donation money and dedicated in memory of a climber that fell off the Bastille, iirc, but was fond of Lumpy. Glendenning? iirc.
Too sad, if the NPS removed the whole thing, as it was a big deal for everyone when the fountain was installed.

No, the fountain is still there, just without water capability. This photo is from yesterday, sorry it's not a good photo, my phone takes crappy pics when the case is on.

My first climb ever at Lumpy was J-Crack...in 1977. Last time there was 95-ish. Lived for 2+ months in the Aspenglen campground in the park in 1980 (yes, park regs were different then).

Due to the proximity of our vehicles, I don't think I ever used the water fountain, so its location is lost in the dust of my memory. Now that I see the photo, yeah, it kinda seems a little familiar.

Bent over? Seriously? The choices were: 1) work with the landowners 2) lose access
