Description

This subarea consists of crags along the Lookout Mountain Road. It includes Lookout Mountain Crag, Crimson Tide Wall, Lover's Leap on Beaver Brook, Beaverbrook Trail Boulders, and Tiers of Zion.

The rock here consists largely of granite, gneiss, and occasionally schist.

Note: a good chunk of the land along the upper parts of Lookout Mountain Road are under the jurisdiction of Jefferson County Open Space. Please be aware of their regulations.

Also, note that some of the land here may be subject to raptor closures, in particular golden eagle nesting that may encompass Feb. 1 through July 31. Hefty fines may be in store for those disinclined to self-education on closure boundaries.

Finally, please remember that Lookout Mountain Road is a heavily used recreational resource by many types of outdoor enthusiasts. Anytime you drive up, there will be cyclists and long boarders on the road, paragliders, and RC planes in the air above, and hikers and sightseers at the pullouts and on the trails. Please drive slowly and carefully, especially around blind corners. You should only pass cyclists when you have a clear sightline to the oncoming lane; there have been too many fatalities. Please also carry a wag bag and pick up your trash. Let's model for the other weekend warriors how to safely and enjoyably share all that Lookout Mountain and Mt. Zion have to offer.

Getting There

From the intersection of CO 93 and US 6, head south along US 6 to a light at 19th Avenue. Drive up and west along Lookout Mountain Road.

Lookout Mountain Crag and Crimson Tide Wall are just below the first big switchback turn, at about mile 1.7. The Tiers of Zion are accessed at the next big switchback turn beyond that. The Beaverbrook Trail Boulders and Lover's Leap on Beaver Brook are accessed from the main parking lot of Windy Saddle Park, which is a little less than a mile beyond the switchbacks.

Cornmeal Porridge 5.7+ 5a 15 V+ 13 MVS 4b  Colorado : Golden : ... : B. Recessed Slab
Cornmeal Porridge takes the middle of the clean panel to the right of the Don'’t Rock My Boat slab. This has enjoyable moves and is similar in character to the bottom pitch of its cousin to the left. The last bolt is a bit to the left of the rest. A longer sling may help. The thin crux moves lie between and around bolts 2 and 3. Don'’t deviate too far from the line at the top, as some loose stuff lurks nearby....[more]   Browse More Classics in Colorado
