Heading back down the road from the Looking Wall, ...

Description

Looking Wall faces West so it is an ideal spot to escape the summer sun before 2pm, or catch the evening sun early or late in the season.

The cliff is composed of fractured granite which offers varied steep climbing, in a very low key atmosphere.

Getting There

From the 395 turn East at the Green Church (just south of Mammoth Airport) on the Benton Crossing Road. After 6.7 miles (at the Owens River Campground), turn left and drive 2.3 miles along a dirt road. Turn right (immediately) after the second gate and head NE for 2.9 miles. Park up on the left. Cross the cattle grid and turn right along the fence line. The cliff is easily seen across the small stream.

The start is blocky and not memorable. Before long a short steep face is encountered. The crux is passing the 2nd bolt on the face.Once the large ledge is reached easier, although not easy, climbing is all that remains between you and the anchors....[more]   Browse More Classics in California

Although it's theoretically possible to set Top-Ropes on some of the routes by scrambling up around the right side ...
first it's difficult to spot the anchors from below, and the anchors are set well below the top of the cliff, so then it's difficult to find them from above, and requires significant 4th class down-climbing (or rappel?) to reach them. And then the route likely requires directionals.
