Living in Canon City as a climber?

I’ve just been offered a job in Canon City and while I realize it’s a bit of a hole, the job seems okay. Are there many climbers living there? Or young, educated interesting outdoorsy folks? Being able to get out climbing after work would go a long way to making it more livable. Or at least some cool folks to hang out with? Any thoughts on moving to Canon City?

Thanks

I live in Pueblo, I'll climb with you.

Southern Colorado is fairly conservative and blue collar. Unfortunately, lots of drugs too. Canon City is a far better choice than Pueblo. Basically take any of the climbing areas I frequent and subtract 45 minutes from the drive.

You've got excellent crimping at Shelf, maybe 20 minutes away. Newlin is 30 minutes. Stultz, Tanner, etc are probably 20. Good mountain bike trails. Tons of potential for great gravel road rides. The river and gorge are immediate. Skiing at Monarch is an hour and a half. There is no climbing wall that I know of.

You might not find anyone to date.

It's probably about the best option in the region for outside stuff.

Housing is more expensive than Pueblo but not bad.

Take a trip there and look around.

Thanks! Yeah, I had my interview down there yesterday, so I’ve had a look around. Not an amazing town but it seems like a cool (ish) area.

From walking around the grocery stores there seems to be a noticeable absence of attractive young women...

It's not Boulder. There's like 1000 routes at Shelf. Not too shabby. Summers there are oppressively hot. There is the river though.

And that's a problem???    ;-)

Just wanted to point out that a large segment of the employment opportunites in CC are at the eleven prisons.

Hi Graham,

I work in Canon City and love to climb at Shelf. Let's climb after work sometime! Also there are some hidden gems in Canon City, you're right, the area has a lot to offer.

I've recently moved to the area, just north Penrose-

Id be happy to have additional partners to climb with..... Quite a bit of climbing once you start poking around.

Fair amount of time mid week as well.  My schedule changes every other week or so.

Mmm not that I know of. But there’s a great community in the springs. If you want to email me you can at jrobinfriedberg@gmail.com. Also we really need more good vets! Everyone is so busy they’re not taking new patients.

I've lived in and around Canon for the past 5 summers and I never thought that I would say it but it's a surprisingly cool place. While there may not be an abundance of young, attractive  folks year round, there are a select few when the rafting industry brings in all the alcoholics for the summer. Shelf is rad, there's a bunch of stuff on oak creek grade, newlin creek is fun. You could also get into boating, there's easy stuff that can be run for like 4 to 5 months. Considering it's a small, weird town, it's pretty cool. And if it turns out you hate it, the springs is only 45 min. away.

Cool - that's good to hear!  Robin, Dimitri, High altitude... - I'll shoot you an email when I'm down there and ready to climb.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
